Fossil documents, preserving traces and identities through time. This collaboration highlights the unique shared history of two multi-disciplinary artists Zahra BuAli, and Le Lin, each from different parts of the world, different generations, and different points in their artistic journey. The artwork emerges from the two artists’ dialogue with each other at Zahra BuAli’s studio and garden, where they intimately engaged with the natural landscape: cut tree stumps, clay, and found natural materials. The core of the process was shaped by making marks and textures out of these found objects. Clay was wrapped and shaped according to the curves and cuts of the tree stump, and printmaking techniques were used to make impressions on the clay. This piece challenges viewers to consider the relationship between permanence and impermanence, the subtle traces we leave behind. It invites us into a dialogue with the land, and with each other.
